The South Coast Air Quality Management District has issued an air quality alert for the South Coast Air Basin — which includes the Big Bear Valley area — due to harmful ozone levels, with the warning running from 1 PM Monday, August 24 through 8 PM Friday, August 28.
Ozone pollution tends to be worst during afternoon and early-evening hours, so residents are advised to limit strenuous outdoor activity during those windows. Conditions can also shift by location and time depending on local emissions and how pollution moves through the air.
Everyone can be affected, but those at greatest risk include people with lung disease, older adults, pregnant people, children, and anyone who spends significant time working or exercising outdoors. Ozone exposure can trigger trouble breathing, asthma attacks, and lasting lung damage.
Residents can check current and forecasted air quality levels for Big Bear's specific area at aqmd.gov/alertinfo (opens in a new tab). The alert remains in effect through Friday evening.
