Air quality alert: wildfire smoke blankets Big Bear Lake through Saturday
The South Coast AQMD is warning residents to limit outdoor exposure as fine particle pollution reaches dangerous levels in the mountains.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District issued an air quality alert for Big Bear Lake and surrounding high-elevation areas of the San Bernardino and San Gabriel mountains on July 10, driven by wildfire smoke pushing fine particle pollution to hazardous levels.
The alert runs through 5 PM Saturday, with the worst conditions expected Friday night and Saturday morning. Particle pollution levels may shift hour to hour depending on fire activity and local wind patterns, so conditions could deteriorate quickly.
Health officials warn that smoke particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and trigger heart attacks, strokes, asthma attacks, and breathing difficulties. While everyone faces some risk, people with heart or lung disease, older adults, pregnant individuals, children, and anyone who spends extended time outdoors are especially vulnerable.
Residents should stay indoors with windows closed when possible and avoid strenuous outdoor activity — particularly Friday night through Saturday morning. A local community response from Big Bear Lake city officials or the fire department could not be confirmed at time of publication.
