Air quality alert: ozone pollution warning in effect through Sunday evening

South Coast AQMD says harmful ozone levels are expected through 8 PM Sunday — sensitive groups should limit outdoor time, especially in the afternoon.

By Big Bear News1 min read

The South Coast Air Quality Management District issued an air quality alert Thursday, July 30, due to harmful levels of ozone pollution, with the warning in effect until 8 PM Sunday, August 2, 2026. The alert was relayed by the National Weather Service out of San Diego.

The advisory covers a broad area of the Inland Empire and surrounding region, including San Bernardino, Redlands, Riverside, Crestline, and the Coachella Valley. Big Bear Valley's specific inclusion in the affected zone could not be confirmed from this alert alone — residents should check directly with South Coast AQMD for local readings.

Ozone can cause serious health problems including trouble breathing, asthma attacks, and lung damage. While everyone faces some risk, people with lung disease, older adults, pregnant individuals, children, and those who spend extended time outdoors are considered most vulnerable. Ozone levels tend to peak during afternoon and early-evening hours.

Residents can monitor current and forecasted air quality conditions at aqmd.gov/alertinfo (opens in a new tab).
