Bear Valley Meals on Wheels seeks volunteer drivers for winter season

The all-volunteer nonprofit delivers meals to 30–40 homebound mountain residents five days a week — and needs more help as cold weather sets in.

Bear Valley Meals on Wheels is asking Big Bear residents to step up as volunteer delivery drivers this winter, when icy roads and freezing temperatures make the program's work both harder and more critical for the valley's most vulnerable neighbors.

The nonprofit delivers meals Monday through Friday, including holidays, to roughly 30 to 40 homebound residents who are unable to leave their homes on their own. Every role in the organization — from drivers to leadership — is filled by volunteers, and all donations flow directly to the cost of meals with no administrative overhead.

The time commitment is modest: typically less than two hours per week, with volunteers free to choose how often they contribute. That flexibility makes it one of the more accessible ways for working residents or part-time mountain locals to give back to the community.

The organization notes a particular need for drivers willing to navigate winter conditions, when some regular volunteers may be unavailable or roads may be challenging.

Residents looking to volunteer — or to donate — can reach Candy Hallstead, president of Bear Valley Meals on Wheels, at 909-806-0360. The program's reach and impact depend entirely on the community it serves showing up for its neighbors.
