18-year-old dies in fall from Big Bear Dam
Sheriff's officials say there is no indication of foul play; a print error in The Grizzly initially reversed that finding.

An 18-year-old died after falling from Big Bear Dam, according to a report from The Grizzly. The incident has drawn attention both for the tragedy itself and for a significant error in how it was initially reported in print.
San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department spokesperson Liz Moran stated that there is no indication of foul play in the death. However, The Grizzly issued a correction after its print edition inadvertently omitted the word "no" from Moran's statement — a single missing word that reversed the meaning entirely, suggesting foul play where none had been indicated.
The Grizzly's online version carries an editor's note flagging the error. The circumstances surrounding the fall — including exactly when and how it occurred — could not be confirmed from the available reporting.
Big Bear News has reached out to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, the Big Bear Municipal Water District (which operates the dam), and Big Bear Lake city officials for additional comment and has not yet received a response. The victim's family and the San Bernardino County coroner's office have not publicly commented, and further details about the young person's identity had not been released as of publication.
Residents with information or concerns about safety at Big Bear Dam are encouraged to contact the Big Bear Municipal Water District directly.
