Free curbside brush chipping returns to Big Bear Valley through September

The Mountain Rim Fire Safe Council is picking up and chipping brush at no cost to residents — but you have to register before the pile is at the curb.

By Big Bear News1 min read

Big Bear Valley residents looking to clear dead brush and reduce fire risk around their homes have a free option this summer: the Mountain Rim Fire Safe Council (MRFSC) is running its curbside chipping program through September, sending crews to chip and haul away brush piles at no charge to homeowners.

The service runs on different schedules depending on where you live. Big Bear area residents can sign up for monthly pickups, with registration deadlines on July 12, August 16, and September 13. Residents in the Rim Communities get twice-monthly service, with additional deadlines on July 26, August 30, and September 27. The program is funded through CAL FIRE's California Climate Investment Fire Prevention grant program, which is what keeps it free.

There are a few important rules to follow before registering. Brush must already be stacked at the curb or roadside before you submit the form — contractors won't backtrack if material isn't ready when they arrive. Registration closes at 6:00 p.m. PST on each Sunday deadline. Once the deadline passes, crews aim to complete chipping within three weeks, though weather and workload can cause delays.

Not everything can go in the pile. The program won't accept root balls, limbs thicker than 8 inches in diameter, pine needles, weeds, leaves, construction lumber, or any material mixed with rocks, dirt, metal, or fasteners. Big Bear residents should also note that chips can only be hauled away — the blow-back and leave-in-a-pile options aren't available in this area.

To register online, visit the MRFSC website and fill out the chipping request form. If you'd prefer to sign up by phone or have questions, call MRFSC at 866-923-FIRE (3473). The next deadline for both Big Bear and Rim Communities residents is July 12.
