The Southern California Mountains Foundation (SCMF) wrapped up 2024 with a slate of conservation and workforce milestones that touched communities across the San Bernardino Mountains, according to the organization's newly released annual report.
SCMF restored 320 acres of habitat and maintained 15.5 miles of trails throughout the year. For hikers, nature lovers, and anyone who enjoys Big Bear's backcountry, that trail work translates directly into safer, better-maintained routes through the mountains.
On the education front, the foundation engaged more than 118,000 visitors through its programs — a figure that reflects the steady stream of day-trippers, school groups, and locals who interact with SCMF's naturalist and interpretive offerings each season.
Perhaps most notably for the local economy, SCMF supported 130 Corpsmembers through paid job training in 2024. The hands-on program gives young adults experience in land management and conservation work — a pipeline that can feed into permanent environmental and public lands jobs in the region.
The foundation described the year as one of "progress, partnership, and meaningful impact across our mountain communities".
Editor's note: SCMF's annual report is a self-published summary. Big Bear News was unable to independently verify the figures cited or obtain comment from a local partner organization, Corpsmember, or Big Bear Valley resident about the on-the-ground impact of these programs. We'll continue to follow up.
